Ask any local what sold them on this stretch of coast and beach access comes up fast. Between Yallingup and Smiths Beach there's a genuine spread of options - sheltered water for young families, a break for improving surfers, and reef breaks that draw experienced riders from across the country. Here's how the two beaches stack up, and where to fit in depending on who you're bringing.

Yallingup Beach

Yallingup Beach is the easiest starting point. The lagoon in front of the town offers calm, protected swimming that's ideal for kids, while the Main Break just offshore is forgiving enough for improving surfers on the right tide. Head further north and the breaks at Rabbits and Shallows get noticeably more serious, best left to experienced surfers who know the reef. The beach itself is also simply a lovely place to spend a full day - sand for the kids, a shaded picnic spot, and clear water for snorkelling on a calm morning.

Surfers wait and paddle on gentle ocean swells under a hazy sky, with small waves rolling in the foreground.

Smiths Beach

South of town, Smiths Beach is the family classic - wide white sand, gently shelving water, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it the go-to for a full day out. The southern end is where most beginners paddle out, while the reef break further along, known as Supertubes, is a serious, fast barrel reserved for advanced surfers on the right swell. It's also one of the best spots on this stretch of coast to simply watch a sunset.

If you're new to it all, Yallingup Surf School runs lessons for all ages right on Smiths Beach and is a great way to get a feel for the local breaks safely, with fully accredited instructors who know exactly which conditions suit beginners on any given day.

Staying nearby also puts you close to Smiths Beach Resort, worth a visit for lunch with a view even if you're not booked in, and a useful spot to check surf conditions from the deck before deciding where to paddle out.

Peak surf season runs April to October, with the cleanest conditions typically on an early low tide and light offshore winds. Whatever your level, the appeal here isn't one perfect beach - it's having this much variety, from toddler-safe lagoon to genuinely world-class reef break, within a ten-minute drive of home.

For anyone new to the area, a good rule of thumb is to spend your first few weekends simply watching before paddling out anywhere unfamiliar. Local surfers are generally happy to point newcomers toward the right break for their level, and the difference in conditions between Yallingup's Main Break and Smiths Beach's Supertubes on the same day can be significant.

Getting to know the rhythm of the local swells is part of the fun of settling into the area, and it's the kind of local knowledge that only comes with time on the water.
